NEW YORK CITY — A mother was charged Wednesday with murder and criminally negligent homicide after her 7-month-old son died of malnutrition and dehydration, police said.

Anwar Jawad, 25, now of Dyker Heights, was also charged with acting in a manner injurious to a child for the January death of her son Dameen Mohammed, the NYPD said.

On Jan. 6, Jawad drove Mohammed from her then-Elie Court home on Staten Island to his grandmother's house in Brooklyn, the New York Post reported. The next day she took the boy to NYU Lutheran Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Doctors suspected possible child neglect and called 911, police said. The Medical Examiner determined last month that Mohammed died from malnutrition and dehydration due to neglect.
