MANHATTAN — Part of Madison Avenue was shut down on the Upper East Side Tuesday evening after a water main break sent water gushing into the street, officials said.
The break happened at Madison Avenue and East 65th Street, police from the 19th Precinct tweeted out at about 6:13 p.m.
The avenue was closed to traffic from East 57th to East 66th streets while responders worked to shut off the leak.
Utility companies and city officials were working to shut off the water valves and expected to have the flooding cleared within "a couple hours," an FDNY chief said at the scene.
Firefighters were also checking buildings for flooding, and at least one member was also seen carrying a person across the street.

The water did not appear to have flooded the sidewalks at East 65th Street and residents were able to get into their buildings.
The city's Department of Environmental Protection did not return an immediate request for comment.
