MANHATTAN — A woman on a Citi Bike was injured after getting run over by a dump truck Monday at a Midtown intersection particularly dangerous for cyclists, a witnesses said.
The cyclist and the truck were heading east on West 30th Street, but paused at the intersection with Seventh Avenue about 11:30 a.m. only to start forward once the light changed green, witnesses and FDNY officials said.
The driver then turned right, hitting the cyclist, according to witnesses said.
"When the light turned green and she thought she had the go ahead, he hit her," said Saquan Ross, 24.
The driver and the woman began shouting at each other afterwards, witnesses said.
"You came out of nowhere! You were in my blind spot," the driver shouted at her, according to Lydia Diaz, 54, who was behind the truck at the time.
The cyclist just kept shouting, "You hit me, you hit me," Diaz said.
People in nearby businesses could hear her shrieks of pain as well, they said.
"I was taking an order on the phone when I heard a girl screaming and I turned around," said a worker at Bravo Pizza, who declined to give his name.
"She was screaming at the top of her lungs. People ran out of my store to help her, pulling her out from under the truck. [They] saved her life. If he'd moved a little more, he'd have killed her," the worker said.
Her leg was badly mangled and "looked like something that came out of a zombie movie," Diaz said.
Crews brought her to Bellevue Hospital where she was treated for injuries that weren't considered life threatening, an FDNY spokesman said.
Her blood was still smeared on the asphalt strewn with her helmet and shoes, a witness said.
The driver, who declined to comment, stayed at the scene and wasn't immediately charged, police said.
The company that operates the truck, New Jersey-based TKO, didn't immediately return a request for comment.
The company, which has only two drivers, hasn't been involved in any crashes in the past two years, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
The intersection where the cyclist was hit has been the scene for many similar incidents.
Three cyclists were injured there each year in 2016, 2015 and 2014, according to the city's Vision Zero map.
Six cyclists were hurt there between 2009 and 2013, the map shows.
Large commercial trucks have been behind many deadly incidents recently, records show.
A Citi Bike spokeswoman confirmed the crash, but touted the program's safety record.
"On Monday morning, a rider on a Citi Bike was involved in a serious crash. Together with the city of New York, we wish her a full recovery," spokeswoman Madeline Kaye said. "The safety of our riders continues to be our top priority, and we will keep working with the city of New York on its street safety efforts."
In April, an Avid Waste System truck rear-ended another driver, sending her into a pole and killing her.
A month later, M&M Sanitation fatally struck a 60-year-old crossing a Manhattan intersection.
