Man Who Tried to Rape 74-Year-Old Woman Surrenders to Police, NYPD Says

THE BRONX — The man who police say tried to a rape a 74-year-old woman inside a Bronx apartment building earlier this month surrendered to authorities Monday, according to the NYPD.

Jsohua McCallum, 24, followed a woman using a walker into an elevator at a building on East 161st Street and Park Avenue, then put her in a chokehold outside an 11th-floor apartment Aug. 18 around 10:45 p.m., police said.

He then groped the woman, but she banged on a neighbor’s door and he fled, the NYPD said.

McCallum, who lives just a block from the scene, was charged with attempted rape, burglary and sexual abuse.

He has just one prior arrest, details of which were sealed, police said.

McCallum was awaiting arraignment in Bronx Criminal Court on Tuesday morning.
