MIDTOWN — A heat advisory will be in effect across the boroughs Tuesday afternoon as a hot air mass moving into the area pushes temperatures into the mid-90s, challenging the century-old city record high, forecasters said.

The advisory goes into effect around noon and will remain in place until about 6 p.m. as temperatures reach about 93 degrees. Heat-index values will likely reach triple digits during that stretch, the National Weather Service said.

“We’re in the dog days of summer when you have a classic Bermuda high sitting off the East Coast,” NWS spokesman Tim Morrin said.

“It’s an air mass from around the Gulf of Mexico. Combine that with high levels of humidity. We’re looking for heat index values as high as 100, 101 degrees.”

The city’s Aug. 22 record high is 95, set in 1916, records show.

A thunderstorm is in the forecast for tonight, which will likely dip temperatures into the low-70s, forecasters said.

The Wednesday high is expected to be about 85 degrees.
