GREENPOINT — The central section of the crumbling old Kosciuszko Bridge was lowered down to the Newtown Creek below on Tuesday and floated down the Newtown Creek Wednesday, according to the contractors.
The bridge's voyage down the Newtown Creek began around noon, according to the state's Department of Transportation and Michael E. Iacovella a spokesman for Skanska USA, the contractors in charge of the operation.
Tug boats pulled the bridge down the East River to be recycled.
The Newtown Creek Alliance documented some of the bridge's removal on Facebook.
Two large segments of the old bridge that span land in Maspeth and Greenpoint are slated for implosion later on this summer at a yet to be determined date.
Revelers have promised fanfare along with the bridge's demolition, with some vowing to defend the old bridge with wolves and swords while others will accompany the implosion with a live brass band.
Before the bridge was lowered, a group of urban explorers gathered for an illicit final party on the span.
