CORONA — The rebuilt Junction Playground re-opened Tuesday after a $1.75 million renovation that includes new playground equipment and spray showers.

The park, at the corner of Junction Boulevard and 34th Avenue, also has new handball and basketball courts, bright landscaping and fences.

There's new playground equipment and swings, and paving stones replaced asphalt in much of the space, Parks Department officials said.

The money for the renovations was mostly allocated by City Councilwoman Julissa Ferreras-Copeland, who said parks are particularly vital in Corona, where many residents don't have backyards or much space at home.

"Parks are so important for our young people because so many of the families that live in our city are living [with] multiple families sometimes in one apartment," she said.

"This is the green space, this is our backyard."
