MANHATTAN — A man suffered life-threatening skull fracture when the driver of a BMW hit him on Riverside Drive and fled Monday night, police said.

The 36-year-old man, whose name wasn't immediately released, was walking west in the crosswalk over Riverside Drive at West 155th Street just minutes after 9 p.m. when the northbound BMW hit him, an NYPD spokesman said.

"I heard a thud. It sounded like metal clanging, like a shopping cart or something. I caught the tail end of the car speeding off. It was moving fast. He was driving north and going at least 35 or 40 mph," said a neighbor who declined to give her name.

"I saw the guy on the ground. He was lying flat on his stomach. His feet were pointed sort of Northeast. I couldn't see any blood. It looked like he was moving a little bit for a couple seconds. His knees started to bend. His body was twisted slightly," said the neighbor.

The man broke his skull along with his left arm and suffered a deep laceration to his head, the spokesman said.

The pedestrian was listed in critical but stable condition at Mount Sinai St. Luke's, police said.

The driver fled and wasn't immediately arrested, police said.
