BROOKLYN — Police identified the woman whose dismembered body was found floating in the water off Red Hook, police said Friday.

The woman’s mother walked into the 76th Precinct after recognizing a tattoo her daughter had on her torso, NYPD Chief of Detectives Bob Boyce said at an unrelated press conference Friday. The mother said the tattoo was a tribute to an aunt.

"That young lady is from New Jersey," Boyce added. "We have an active homicide case and we’re on that right now."

Police did not reveal the victim's name or age.

The medical examiner is still determining her cause of death.
