Elderly Woman Dies as Fire Tears Through Her Apartment, NYPD Says

MANHATTAN — An 88-year-old woman died and an elderly man who lived with her was critically injured when a fire tore through their Morningside Heights apartment Monday night, police said.

The pair, whose names weren't immediately released, were home in their 15th floor La Salle Street apartment, near Amsterdam Avenue, when flames erupted inside about 7:22 p.m., an NYPD spokesman said.

The woman was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai St. Luke's, police said.

The man, 86, was taken to the same hospital where he's listed in critical condition, police said.

It wasn't immediately clear what sparked the blaze.
