Purse Snatcher Jumps in Hudson River in Failed Bid to Evade Capture: NYPD

By Trevor Kapp | June 5, 2017 3:01pm

MANHATTAN — A purse snatcher jumped into the Hudson River to avoid police capture, but his desperate bid to escape ended in an arrest and a trip to the hospital, according to the NYPD.

Officers from the 24th Precinct spotted the bandit after he snatched the bag near West 88th Street and Riverside Drive just after midnight Monday, police said.

The officers then chased him west through Riverside Park before he jumped in the Hudson, the NYPD said.

Emergency Service Unit and Harbor Unit officers dove in the water after him and took him into custody without further incident, police said.

They then took the man to St. Luke’s Hospital as a precaution, the NYPD said.

Charges against him were still pending Monday afternoon.
