LONG ISLAND CITY — Macy's annual Fourth of July fireworks will return with a bang over the East River this summer for the fourth year in a row, officials announced Monday.
The 25-minute pyrotechnic display will kick off at 9:25 p.m. on July 4, and will be shot off from five barges on the East River between 24th and 41st streets, meaning spectators along the waterfront in Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan's east side will have the best views of the display.
This is the fourth year in a row that the fireworks are being staged on the East River, having returned in 2014 after being held over the Hudson River for five years. Public viewing areas for the show will be set up along the FDR Drive, among other locations in Brooklyn and Queens, Macy's said in a press release.
The department store will once again be staging the show from headquarters set up in Long Island City's Hunters Point South Park, which will be closed to the public the day of the event, a spokesman said.
But spectators can head a few blocks north to Gantry Plaza State Park, where viewing areas will be set up near the waterfront between 48th and 46th avenues, staff of the NYPD's 108th Precinct said at a recent Community Board 2 meeting.
A number of streets in the Hunters Point neighborhood will also be closed to traffic as in previous years, as the NYPD prepares for large crowds.
