UPPER EAST SIDE — Dozens of exhibits and performances will be open with free admission during the Museum Mile Festival on June 13.
From 6 to 9 p.m., Fifth Avenue's prestigious museums and art galleries will open their doors to the public for free, including El Museo del Barrio's "UPTOWN: nasty women/bad hombres" show featuring art exploring racism, homophobia, and sexism, and the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum's jazz age collection.
Adults can learn how to salsa, draw from a live model or pretend they're in a work of art, while kids will have a ton of activities to choose from, like making their own musical instruments or climbing on imaginative playgrounds.
This is what's on the schedule for this year's festival:
► El Museo del Barrio at 104th Street
Exhibits: "NKAME: A Retrospective of Cuban Printmaker Belkis Ayón," is a retrospective of the work of this Cuban artist who produced large works of art that were viewed as powerful visual iconography.
"UPTOWN: nasty women/bad hombres," features artwork delving into sexism, racism, homophobia, violence and the power of the media.
Performance: Brazilian Band Fogo Azul Bateria Feminina, DJ Shabbakano, Carlos Jesus Martinez Dominguez and Leslie Jimenez.
Activities: Kids can create music instruments with the Little Orchestra Society.
► Museum of the City of New York at 103rd Street
Exhibit: "Rhythm and Power: Salsa in New York" is all about how salsa erupted from the 1960s social scene. Catch it before it officially opens on June 14.
Performance: Carlos Mateu will put on a salsa performance and dance lesson
Activities: Salsa dance lessons and various street art activities.
► The Jewish Museum at 92nd Street
Exhibit: "Florine Stettheimer: Painting Poetry," shows more than 50 paintings and drawings, costumes, theater designs, photographs and ephemera by this American painter.
Performance: Banda de Los Muertos, in collaboration with Bang on a Can
Activities: Take part in theatrical scenes inspired by Stettheimer's paintings.
► Soloman R. Guggenheim Museum at 89th Street
Exhibit: "Visionaries: Creating a Modern Guggenheim" explores six collections the Guggenheim's early patrons, who made significant artists of their day more well known, including Picasso, Kandinsky, Pollock, Mondrian, and Brancusi.
Performance: Sarah King and the Smoke Rings
► Neue Galerie New York at 86th Street
Exhibit: "Austrian Masterworks from the Neue Galerie New York" gives a glimpse into the artistry of Gustave Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, Alfred Kubin, and Egon Schiele.
► Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, 91st Street
Exhibit: "The Jazz Age: American Style in the 1920s," explores American taste during the 1920s, including interior and industrial design, decorative art, jewelry, fashion, architecture, music and film.
Activities: Children can create and play on the Imagination Playground.
► The Metropolitan Museum of Art at 82nd Street
Exhibits: "Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between" shows a designer's experimentation through 120 examples of womenswear from 1981 through the present. Also open to the public are "Age of Empires: Chinese Arts of the Qin and Han Dynasties," "Irving Penn: Centennial," "The Roof Garden Commission: Adrián Villar Rojas, The Theater of Disappearance," (weather permitting) and "P.S. Art 2017: Celebrating the Creative Spirit of NYC Kids."
Performance: Dancers from Sidra Bell Dance New York.
Activities: Drawing with a live model.
More fun for children can be had on Museum Mile with "Silly Billy the Very Funny Clown" and "Sammie & Tudie's Imagination Playhouse."
