BROOKLYN — A man was arrested for assault after punching a cab driver in the face in a fight over his fare Monday night, police said.

Khaleil Cherry, 22, punched the 56-year-old cabbie, who was dropping him off near Marcus Garvey Boulevard and Gates Avenue about 7:35 p.m., an NYPD spokeswoman said.

The driver suffered bruising and swelling to his face, as well as a cut to his nose, police said.

Cherry, who had an active warrant for his arrest, was taken into custody at the scene and charged with assault and harassment, police said. The NYPD did not know what the warrant was for.

He hadn't been arraigned as of Tuesday morning, records show.

Cherry has been arrested in the past, but many of those police records are sealed, an NYPD spokeswoman said.
