Father of 3 Struck and Killed on Bike by Drunk Driver in Sunnyside: NYPD

By Katie Honan | April 3, 2017 10:03am

SUNNYSIDE — An unlicensed drunk driver struck and killed a delivery man as he was biking home from work, police said.

Cristian Guiracocha was driving his 2002 red Ford Escape at the intersection of 43rd Avenue and 39th Street in Sunnyside just before 3 a.m. Saturday when he hit Gelasio Reyes, 32, according to police.

Guiracocha, 25, fled the scene, leaving Reyes on the road severely injured, authorities said. Reyes was later pronounced dead at Elmhurst Hospital.

Police arrested Guiracocha hours later, charging him with driving while intoxicated, driving without a license and refusing to take a breath test.

Reyes' heartbroken family is now trying to raise money to bury the father of three in his native Mexico, Telemundo reported. His wife told the station he rode his bike to a job in Manhattan and was on his way to their home in Corona when he was struck.

Guiracocha was released on $100,000 bail and is due back in court April 14, court records show. His private attorney did not immediately respond to calls for comment.
