We’re pleased to report that everyone’s favorite sign of spring — Brooklyn’s cherry blossoms — have officially arrived.
The very first blooms on the cherry trees at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden have popped out as of Wednesday, according to the garden’s CherryWatch blossom-tracker map.
So far, there are only two trees in bloom — one near the BBG’s famous Cherry Esplanade and another near the garden’s pond — but after the last few days of cold, misty rain, we’ll take ‘em.
All of the other cherry trees are in the “pre-bloom” phase, the map says.
Despite this year’s weird late-winter weather, including our balmy February and March’s slushstorm, experts at the BBG say the cherry blossom showing will be just fine this spring.
The cherry blossom season typically lasts for several weeks between March and June, but the peak bloom time is hard to predict, the garden staff has said.
The BBG’s annual cherry blossom festival, Sakura Masturi, is planned for the last week of April.
