Truck Driver Arrested After Fatally Hitting Elderly Woman in Flushing: NYPD

By Ben Fractenberg | March 13, 2017 3:52pm

QUEENS — A tow truck driver who fatally struck an 81-year-old woman last week in Flushing was arrested after the collision, officials said Monday.

Ping Xie, 81, was in the crosswalk on Kissena Boulevard on March 9 at about 2:59 p.m. when Frederick Alsterberg, 81, made a left turn onto the boulevard from Holly Avenue and hit her, according to the NYPD.

Xie suffered head trauma and was rushed to New York Presbyterian-Queens Hospital where she passed away later the same day.

Alsterberg was arrested after the incident and charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian, failure to exercise due care and driving with a tinted windshield. He was given a desk appearance ticket and released.

It was not immediately clear why police waited a week to announce the charges.

There were 163 cyclists and pedestrians killed in crashes in 2016, the most since Mayor Bill de Blasio instituted Vision Zero in 2014.

Alsterberg could not immediately be reached for comment.
