Mom Charged After 6-Year-Old Son Brings Her Heroin to School, Officials Say

By Trevor Kapp | March 6, 2017 5:23pm

WHITESTONE — A Queens mom was arrested after she packed heroin in her 6-year-old son's backpack that he brought to school, prosecutors said.

Leah Pagano, 36, put glassine envelopes, pills and straws into her son’s school bag that he then carried into P.S. 209 on Utopia Parkway, near 16th Road, Friday at about 8:30 a.m., the Queens DA’s Office said.

The boy later showed it to a teacher’s aide who notified authorities, prosecutors said.

“I cannot believe I did this,” she told police, according to the criminal complaint. “I could not find my box with heroin inside. I was not sure if it was in his school bag and went to sleep.”

Pagano confessed to police that she snorts the drug, according to court papers.

She was charged with drug possession, endangering the welfare of a child and acting in a manner injurious to a child.

She was released on her own recognizance and is due back in court on April 25.

The Daily News first reported the arrest.

Pagano's lawyer could not immediately be reached for comment.
