83-Year-Old Woman Punched Because She Doesn't Speak English, Police Say

By Dartunorro Clark | February 14, 2017 2:18pm

EAST HARLEM — An 83-year-old woman using a walker was knocked down by a man frustrated because she didn't understand what he said to her, police said.

The woman was inside her Madison Avenue apartment building around 6 p.m. on Feb. 3 when a man stormed into the building apparently looking for an acquaintance, police said.

When he asked the woman about the unknown person, she couldn't understand him because English was not her native language, she told police.

The suspect hit her on the left side of her face, causing her to fall on her walker and suffer swelling to her face and back pain, police said.

The victim reported the crime on Feb. 7. Police released details a week later.

The suspect is described as about 40-year-old and 5-foot-9.
