EAST HARLEM — The latest victims in a spate of mailbox check thefts in Harlem were two women trying to pay bills, police said.

A 56-year-old woman told police she mailed a $2,385 money order to her landlord early last month, but the payment was never received. The money order was cashed around Jan. 30, police said.

The payment was mailed at a box on East 124th Street at Lexington Avenue, police said.

In another incident, a 71-year-old woman said she placed three checks totaling $2,765 in a street mailbox on East 118th Street and Pleasant Avenue on Jan. 20, police said.

She told police on Feb. 2 she discovered the checks were cashed by an unknown person.

Mailbox thefts have been reported to police in the neighborhood since August last year.

Last month, $11,000 in bill payments from a social services organization were taken from a box.

A U.S. Postal Inspection Service spokeswoman told DNAinfo it is continuing to work with the NYPD to investigate the thefts.
