EAST HARLEM — An apartment hunter was scammed out of $3,600 by another man advertising a fake Brooklyn apartment online, the NYPD said.
The victim, 49, responded to an ad posted online for an apartment in Bed-Stuy and scheduled a meeting with the poster on Jan. 6 around 4 p.m., police said.
The two men met in Brooklyn, but not at the apartment location, to exchange money for the apartment keys. The victim handed over the deposit for the keys to the apartment, police said.
But when the victim went to check out the apartment — on Herkimer Street — he found out it did not exist, police said.
The victim told police the suspect was a man standing 5-foot-5 and weighing 150 pounds.
