ELMHURST — A mother strangled her 1-year-old daughter inside their apartment on Elmhurst Avenue — then confessed to the brutal crime, police said.

A roommate called 911 after baby Sanggye Lhakyi was found unconscious on a bed in mom Shangbo Xiangshengjie's apartment at Elmhurst Avenue and Hampton Street at 6 p.m. Tuesday, according to police.

Sanggye's death was ruled a homicide by ligature strangulation, according to Julie Bolcer, spokeswoman for the city medical examiner's office.

Sources said the roommate told 911 operators that Xiangshengjie killed her child.

Xiangshengjie, 33, was arrested at the apartment and charged with murder, police said. She later confessed to killing her daughter in interviews with police officers, sources said.

She was brought from the 110th Precinct to Elmhurst Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation Wednesday morning, police said.

Neighbor Lydia Santa Maria said Xiangshengjie moved into the apartment within the last six months.

She last saw her about a month ago, playing with her daughter in the front of the house. When she found out what happened, she was "shaking."

"It's scary," she said, before leaving to go to a nearby church to "pray for the child."
