EAST VILLAGE — A woman was found dead in bed in the Lillian Wald Houses Wednesday afternoon with a scarf wrapped around her neck and the door to her apartment ajar, according to law enforcement sources.
Police responding to a call about an unconscious woman in the apartment at 10 Avenue D at around 1:42 p.m. arrived to find Brooke Garcia, 27, unresponsive in bed, covered by a white blanket, police and a source said. Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene.
A scarf was wrapped around her neck, indicating either suicide or homicide, according to sources, though the medical examiner has yet to determine the cause of death and the investigation is ongoing.
Garcia's body was discovered by a female friend who said the door to the apartment had been left open, according to a law enforcement source. Police find the fact the door had been left ajar suspicious, according to the source.
There had not been any arrests as of Wednesday evening, police said.
