QUEENS — An elderly man was fatally struck by an FDNY ambulance as he tried to cross the Cross Island Parkway in Queens Village Wednesday night, NYPD officials said.

The 89-year-old victim, whose name wasn't immediately released, was crossing the parkway near 109th Avenue about 8:13 p.m. when an ambulance, which was not responding to an emergency call, headed southbound hit him, NYPD officials said.

Ambulance workers tried to help him until another ambulance arrived to pick him up, police said.

He was pronounced dead at North Shore University Hospital, officials said.

The ambulance driver was not arrested or ticketed, police said.

FDNY officials didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
