EAST WILLIAMSBURG — A knife-wielding attacker tried to stab a woman leaving a party, but her friend jumped in the way and fended him off, getting sliced by the weapon himself, police said.
A stranger approached a 43-year-old woman on the street at 11:20 on Saturday night, police said, in industrial East Williamsburg at 1301 Metropolitan Ave. with a knife raised, police said.
Her 33-year-old friend saw what was happening and jumped in the way of the blade, fighting off the man who soon ran off, police said.
In the struggle, the 33-year-old was sliced on his head and upper back and later went to the hospital and needed stitches, according to police.
The stabbing is part of an unusual spike in felony assaults last week in Williamsburg's 90th Precinct where eight people were attacked between Dec. 5 and Dec. 11, compared with three, the same week last year.
This year in total felony assaults are up 21 percent, though major crimes are down, according to police statistics.
