Elderly Man Dies After Being Struck by Car in Astoria Crosswalk, Police Say

DITMARS — An elderly man who was struck by a car while crossing the street in Astoria died from his injuries a day after the crash, according to the NYPD.

Savas Maounis, 88, was walking in the northbound crosswalk at the intersection of 33rd Street and 23rd Avenue around 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 18 when he was hit by a van making a left turn onto 23rd Avenue, according to police.

Maounis was taken to Elmhurst Hospital with trauma to his head and body. He died from his injuries the next day, police said.

The driver of the van stayed at the scene, according to police. Officials are continuing to investigate.
