'Cat in the Hat' Part of Anti-Gay Group Attack at Jane Hotel, NYPD Says

WEST VILLAGE — Seven people in costumes, including one dressed as the Cat in the Hat, attacked a man in a Jane Hotel elevator after one of the group made an anti-gay statement toward him, police said.

The NYPD released a video showing the seven people — five men and two women — with the victim in an elevator at the hotel at 113 Jane St. on Oct. 30 about 1 a.m.

Police said one of the costumed people made an anti-gay statement toward the 36-year-old victim, and then one punched him, and another kicked him in the face.

The victim was left with a gash on his forehead and took himself to Mount Sinai Hospital for treatment, police said.

The seven attackers fled after the incident, police said.

Police described the attackers as five men and two women between 20 and 30 years old.
