WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — An innocent bystander who was shot in the shoulder after witnessing a murder in Highbridge Park on Monday afternoon chased after the gunman and flagged down a police officer, who arrested the suspect, NYPD officials said.

Corvell Hampton, a 28-year-old from Chicago, fatally shot a 36-year-old man and also wounded a 31-year-old man at West 165th Street and Edgecombe Avenue about 1 p.m. in a possible drug-related dispute, police said Tuesday.

The 31-year-old victim, who was not the intended target, then chased after Hampton on the Washington foot bridge and alerted a nearby police officer, the NYPD said.

The officer caught Hampton, and the weapon was later recovered, police said.

The surviving victim was taken to Lincoln Hospital in stable condition.

Hampton was charged with murder, attempted murder, criminal use of a firearm and criminal possession of a weapon, police said.
