NAVY YARD — Thousands of new solar panels will now help power part of the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

ConEdison Solutions has completed the installation of 3,152 solar panels on the roof of the Navy Yard’s Building 293 — making it one of the largest such rooftop installations in the city, according to the mayor's office.

The new panels will generate 1.1 million kilowatt hours of energy per year, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 1.4 million pounds and saving up to 76,000 gallons of gasoline each year, the mayor's office said.

“We’re doubling jobs at the Navy Yard, and those workers, computers and machines will need sustainable energy,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement. “On rooftops across the city, we’re installing new solar panels to cut emissions, create green jobs and save money.”

The new solar panels will help the city reach its goal of generating 100 megawatts of renewable energy on public buildings by 2025, and 1,000 megawatts by 2030 — enough energy to power more than 250,000 homes, the mayor's office said.

ConEdison Solutions will operate and maintain the panels at the Navy Yard, where there are currently more than 300 businesses employing more than 7,000 people.

The project was funded by more than $625,000 in incentives secured by ConEdison Solutions from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).
