DUMBO — Hundreds of orange life jackets worn by refugees who crossed the Mediterranean were placed on Brooklyn Bridge Park's Pebble Beach Friday.
The life jackets, meant to highlight the world's refugee crisis, were collected from the beaches of Chios in Greece and used by adults and children.
The display was organized by international aid agency Oxfam ahead of next week's United Nations Summit for Refugees and Migrants.
"These life jackets illustrate just one of the many dangerous routes that people take in search of safety and dignity," Josephine Liebl, Oxfam's policy lead on global migration, said in a statement. "Saving lives and upholding the human rights of all people on the move must be a priority for all governments."
More than 65 million people have become refugees due to conflict, violence and persecution in their home countries, according to the organization.
