The sheer size of the New York City public school system is astounding. There are roughly 1.1 million students and approximately 75,000 teachers, who start school on Thursday in nearly 1,500 buildings across the boroughs.

Overseeing such a massive system requires a hefty investment. For the 2016-17 school year, the Department of Education’s proposed total budget is nearly $30 billion.

We’ve compiled other facts and figures that define the public schools and invite you to take this quiz below. Test your knowledge of all facets of the school system, from the percentage of New York City students enrolled in charter schools to the number of 11th graders who will get to see "Hamilton" this year.
