NEW YORK CITY — Uber is offering New Yorkers a new pre-tax commuting option via its ride-sharing service UberPool, the company announced Tuesday.

The program, which started rolling out Tuesday, will let New Yorkers pay for UberPool using commuter benefits that are offered through their employers. From 7 to 10 a.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, rides that begin and end below 125th Street in Manhattan are $5, according to Uber's website.

Uber partnered with WageWorks for the new payment option.

Currently, New Yorkers can use their pre-tax income to purchase MetroCards, as well as Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North, NJ Transit and PATH tickets.

Uber's competitor Lyft also offers a carpooling option called Lyft Line, and the yellow cab industry, which has been losing rides to both car-hailing services, is also expected to introduce a ride-sharing service by the end of 2016.
