FINANCIAL DISTRICT —  A straphanger fended off a would-be robber who repeatedly punched him on the subway, police said.

After the 49-year-old Brooklyn man walked into the Fulton Street station at Fulton and Nassau at about 8 p.m. on July 28, he was approached by a man from behind who quickly became violent, police said.

The attacker proceeded to punch him in the face multiple times, officials said.

The man demanded money from the victim, who refused and managed to “fight off” the attempted robber, according to a police report.

The victim was left with a bruised and swollen face.

The incident is still under investigation, according to police.
