JACKSON HEIGHTS — The city wants to know how civic-minded neighbors in western Queens are — and how they can help boost involvement.
The Mayor's Community Affairs Unit, along with NYC Service and the City University of New York, will be out in Jackson Heights on Saturday, Aug. 13, to learn how involved residents are in their community. The city will then take that information and offer support to volunteer groups, organizers said.
The goal is also to measure local engagement against statistics from the national census, officials said.
Jackson Heights — along with Woodside and Sunnyside, which will be surveyed in the fall — were selected for their diversity, according to an official.
“This is truly a unique opportunity for the city to collaborate with residents directly and understand how to better engage them in their neighborhoods," said Paula Gavin, the city's chief service officer.
The program will expand to other neighborhoods in 2018, she added.
