27-Year-Old Arrested in Fatal Punch of Flatbush Man

FLATBUSH — Police arrested a man last week in the death of 50-year-old Julius Howard, who was found drunk and bloodied near his Flatbush home this spring.

Justin Thomas, 27, was recorded on surveillance footage punching Howard twice in the head around 10 a.m. on May 19 at the corner of Nostrand and Foster avenues, prosecutors said.

The older man was found at the intersection — located just a half block from his New York Avenue home — highly intoxicated with cuts to his head, officials said. He was taken to Kings County Hospital for treatment, where he died from blunt force trauma 10 days later, court documents say.

Thomas, a resident of the nearby Flatbush Gardens housing complex, was arrested on Aug. 4 and charged with assault in the third degree for the crime. A grand jury will determine whether additional charges are warranted, prosecutors said.

Thomas is currently being held on $7,500 bail. His attorney could not immediately be reached for comment.
