JAMAICA — A man attacked a straphanger with a cane in the Sutphin Boulevard subway station Tuesday after the two wanted to use a MetroCard reader at the same time, police said.

The 24-year-old victim wanted to use the reader at the station but another man, who was holding a large pile of MetroCards, was already using it around 1:30 p.m., police said.

The victim asked if he could quickly check the balance on his card which angered the suspect, who then hit the victim on the head and body with a cane before fleeing, authorities said.

The victim was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital where he was treated and released, officials said.

Police described the suspect as a man with a heavy build. He was last seen wearing a black du-rag, blue shirt and blue jeans.

Anyone with information is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
