STATEN ISLAND — Former Rep. Vito Fossella owes more than $3,000 in back taxes for his 2008 re-election campaign, which he abandoned after a drunken-driving charge led to the revelation that he had a secret family, according to records.

Fossella has an outstanding warrant out for his "Committee to Re-elect V. Fossella" campaign after he didn't pay $1,747 in taxes for the group in 2007, according to the Department of Taxation and Finance.

Including interest, Fossella currently owes $3,303 to the state, a spokeswoman for the agency said.

Fossella did not respond to a request for comment, but told the Staten Island Advance it was "the first I'm hearing of this" and blamed it on the firing of his former campaign treasurer.

"Had I been notified about this; it would have been rectified," Fossella told the paper.

Fossella abandoned his re-election campaign in 2008 and left office after he was arrested for DWI in Virginia, which led to the discovery that he had fathered a daughter in an extramarital affair, the Daily News reported.

He currently works for the lobbying firm Park Strategies and, despite the scandals, was a favorite among some to run again for his seat after Rep. Michael Grimm resigned.
