QUEENS — An off-duty Department of Correction employee was arrested early Wednesday after he was found drunk while sleeping behind the wheel of his running car in Jamaica, police sources said.

Police received reports of a suspicious car parked at the intersection of 90th Avenue and Parsons Boulevard around 2:40 a.m., law enforcement sources said.

When officers arrived to the scene, they found Edwin Castillo, 40, sleeping behind the wheel, sources said.

The keys were in the ignition, the engine was idling and the driver's side door was open, according to sources.

Officers smelled of alcohol, sources said.

Castillo was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, police said.

His blood alcohol content level was not immediately known.

Castillo, who has worked for the Department of Correction since November 2005, has been suspended, sources said.

“The vast majority of Department of Correction staff perform their duties with the highest level of integrity and Commissioner Ponte has zero tolerance for those who don’t," a spokeswoman for the agency said in an email.

The Department of Correction said that the incident is currently under investigation.

Castillo had not been arraigned as of Wednesday morning, according to the Queens District Attorney's office.

Attorney information for Castillo was not immediately available.
