BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — Brooklyn is no stranger to the loss of small businesses, whether due to rent hikes or declining foot traffic.

One commercial corridor, Smith Street, has seen more than a dozen closings in the past year and the soaring cost of retail rents has added an additional burden on mom-and-pop shops trying to stay afloat.

On Friday morning, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce will host a panel discussion on "How to Save Brooklyn's Retail Corridors" at St. Francis College's Callahan Center, located at 180 Remsen St. in Brooklyn Heights.

The discussion is scheduled for 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Speakers on the panel include Carlo Scissura, the Chamber of Commerce's president and CEO; Assemblywoman Jo Anne Simon; Councilman Brad Lander; as well as real estate experts Larisa Ortiz, of commercial consulting firm Larisa Ortiz Associates, and Tim King, managing partner at CPEX.
