SUNSET PARK — The city is proposing to open a 300-seat school in a former NYPD precinct house in Sunset Park to ease the severe overcrowding that has burdened local schools for years.
The School Construction Authority has begun the public process for a new school at 4302 Fourth Ave. at 43rd Street in the neighborhood, officials said. That would include the former 68th Precinct building as well as an adjoining lot.
City officials will be presenting the plan to Community Board 7's land use committee and District 15's Community Education Council on June 13.
The public meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. at 4201 Fourth Ave. in Sunset Park.

While funding has been set aside for new seats in Sunset Park, the lack of space to build a new school has posed a problem for the neighborhood.
Officials have been looking at multiple sites to build or open a new school, including ones suggested by community members and local stakeholders.
The former NYPD station house and stable, built in 1886, sold for $6 million last year.
The landmarked buildings were slated to become a community center after the Brooklyn Chinese-American Association purchased the property. But they were instead left in a complete state of disrepair and would require a complete gut renovation, DNAinfo New York previously reported.
