NEW YORK CITY — The New York State Department of Education has released many of the English and math questions that appeared on this year’s controversial standardized tests given to third- through eighth-grade students.

As part of an effort from the state to rescue the exam’s reputation as the opt out movement has swelled, roughly 75 percent of the questions were released — more than ever before. They were shared several months earlier than they usually are.

Previously, questions were released in August — which angered many parents and educators since school was already out for the year, rendering the answers useless as a tool for their teachers.

“As a lifelong educator, I know the value of receiving timely information about how students performed on annual assessments,” State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia wrote in a memo.

“In my experience, you can never have this data soon enough.”
