BROOKLYN — Police arrested a 13-year-old boy for giving an 8-year-old a loaded gun that the child brought to school, officials said.

The teen, whose name was withheld because of his age, was arrested Friday and charged as a juvenile with criminal possession of a weapon, according to the NYPD.

The arrest came after an 8-year-old brought a gun to his East Flatbush elementary school at P.S. 91 on Friday morning, police said.

School officials found the gun in the boy’s backpack during a “school spirit day” event outside, according to the NYPD.

Students in the yard were asked to sit on their bags, an NYPD spokesman said, and the boy refused. Upon further investigation, school officials discovered the weapon in his backpack.

The gun was never fired and no injuries were reported, according to police. It wasn’t immediately clear why he brought the gun to school or when it was given to him.

According to reports, the 13-year-old is the 8-year-old's brother. Police would not confirm the relationship between the two.
