BROOKLYN — The Brooklyn Museum is asking members of its staff to consider stepping down.

The institution at 200 Eastern Parkway is offering voluntary buyouts for employees as it tries to tackle a $3 million budget deficit, a museum spokeswoman said.

"Like many other prominent cultural organizations in New York, the cost of running the museum has substantially grown, creating a structural deficit," said Fatima Kafele in a statement.

The museum has approximately 300 full-time employees and operates on a $38.6 million budget, and the buyouts are a "course correction,"  according to Kafele.

"The Museum is being proactive ... realigning its work with its budget, restructuring its staff, cutting non-essential spending, and investing in areas that will enhance core programs and increase support," she said.

News of the buyouts was first reported by the New York Times.
