QUEENS — A 61-year-old woman was seriously injured when a tractor-trailer hit her in Wavecrest Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

The woman, whose identity wasn't immediately released, was hit as she was crossing the street near Beach Channel Drive and Mott Avenue about 1:22 p.m., according to NYPD and FDNY officials.

A local resident, Marie Brown, was on the corner of that intersection when the victim was hit.

"She was under the truck waving for help," she said. "She wasn't in no good shape. You're dying when you're under the truck."

Brown said the victim is often on Mott Avenue in front of a deli asking for change.

"She's usually sitting by the lamppost begging for a dollar, every day she sit right there," she said.

Brown also said that it appeared the driver did not realize they had hit anyone and had to be flagged down by a bystander to get them to stop.

The woman was treated at Jamaica Hospital for serious injuries, officials said.

The circumstances of the crash weren't immediately clear.

The NYPD said it was investigating.
