QUEENS — A gun-wielding man shouted, "I'm ready to die!" after police shot him in the leg during a confrontation Wednesday night in which he fled a traffic stop with an NYPD sergeant still in his car, sources said.
Police spotted the driver, Ramell Lockwood, 34, in a silver Mercedes-Benz running numerous red lights near Hollis Avenue and 212th Street just before 11 p.m. and pulled him over near 214th Street, according to authorities.
An officer and a sergeant walked up on either side of the sedan, which may not belong to the driver, and asked Lockwood to put the car in park, which he refused to do, police said.
The sergeant opened the passenger-side door and reached in to turn off the ignition to the car, but Lockwood put his foot to the gas, police said.
The sergeant didn't want to be dragged by the car so he hopped into the Mercedes and tried to convince Lockwood to stop until they slammed into a wall near 217th Street, sources said.
Lockwood then climbed over his seat and left the car through the back passenger door as the sergeant got out and tried to grab him, sources said.
Officers, who had been following in an unmarked car, noticed Lockwood had a loaded .40-caliber semi-automatic Glock in his waistband and warned their colleagues, sources said.
Lockwood pulled his gun so the sergeant shot one round, hitting him in the right leg, police said.
As police moved to arrest him, the suspect shouted "I'm ready to die!" and bit one of the officers, leaving a wound, sources said.

One officer was bitten by the suspect during the arrest. The officer is being treated at the hospital and is in stable condition.

The suspect was treated at Queens Hospital, where he's in stable condition, police said.
Lockwood was charged with assault, criminal possession of a weapon, menacing, reckless endangerment and resisting arrest.
Five officers were transported to Long Island Jewish Medical Center for evaluation and another was treated for a bit wound to his left arm, police said.
