HARLEM — The Apollo Theater announced the appointment of a new executive to lead its artistic productions on Tuesday.

Kamilah Forbes, a producer with a string of well-known projects under her belt, will become the Apollo's executive producer in September because of her breadth of experience, theater officials said.

“My own career has continually found inspiration in so much of what is deeply rooted in the Apollo’s legacy," Forbes said. "I’m thrilled to join the Apollo’s leadership team, and to be part of shaping this great institution’s future."

Forbes has worked with The Kennedy Center and as a producer for the famous "DEF Poetry Jam" on HBO. She was also an associate director on the Broadway revival of "A Raisin in the Sun,"and was a producer on the recent live television adaptation of "The Wiz".

For the last 15 years, Forbes served as co-founder and artistic director of HiARTS, a New York-based nonprofit that produces performing and visual arts and arts education programs.

“Kamilah is a deeply creative and collaborative producer, with a sensibility that embraces so many artistic disciplines and a commitment to supporting emerging artists that parallels our own,” said Jonelle Procope, president of the Apollo Theater.

The appointment comes as the Apollo launched a new series featuring emerging comics, "Apollo Comedy Club," and is expected to present more than 100 performances on its stages during its current season.
