LONGWOOD — Trains along the 2 and 5 lines were suspended for part of Thursday morning in The Bronx while crews checked an unstable building near elevated tracks on Southern Boulevard, officials said.
FDNY was notified about 6 a.m. of an unstable building under construction at 1232 Southern Boulevard, near Freeman Street, a department spokesman said.
FDNY and Department of Buildings evacuated 42 people from that site and eight buildings around it, the FDNY spokesman said.
"They came knocking on my door. They told us to leave and to stay away from the windows because it could shatter them," said Rolando Hernandez, 41, who lives on the eighth floor of a building across from the construction site.
"My wife packed up her bags. We thought the whole thing might come down."
Residents were allowed back home by 9 a.m. and there were no reported injuries, officials said.
Trains along the 2 and 5 lines were partially suspended, but returned to normal service with delays about 8:45 a.m., according to the MTA website.
