Think you’re an expert at recognizing the architecture of New York City neighborhoods?

We asked our local reporters to take to the streets they cover to snap pictures of residential buildings that captured a sense of place. We're inviting you to guess where they are.

The pictures reveal the threads that tie the city’s architecture together, but also the quirks that give neighborhoods their own flavor.

Building styles reflect when neighborhoods developed and had growth spurts, said Francis Morrone, architectural historian, writer and professor of architectural and urban history at NYU. Immigrant patterns also play a role, said.

“You can see commonalities between them all,” said Ward Dennis, of the historic preservation firm Higgins Quasebarth & Partners and a professor in the Historic Preservation program at Columbia, “but they are also sort of specific to their neighborhoods and when they developed and how they changed.”

DNAinfo's Amy Zimmer wrote this story. Camille Bautista, Danielle Tchlolakian, Eddie Small, Gwynne Hogan, Heidi Patalano, Jeanmarie Evelly, Katie Honan, Maya Rajamani, Nicholas Rizzi, Nigel Chiwaya and Rachel Holiday Smith contributed.
