CARNEGIE HILL — A 76-year-old woman died from her injuries after a driver hit her while backing into a parking spot on Madison Avenue, police said.

Mary Jo Myszelow, of Cornwall, N.Y., was trying to cross Madison Avenue mid-block near the East 95th Street intersection when a man in a black Lincoln sedan backed into her at about 5:50 p.m. on March 26, according to authorities.

The driver was headed north on Madison when he noticed the parking spot, and not seeing Myszelow, started going reverse, police said.

Myszelow, who suffered head injuries, was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she died from her injuries five days later, on March 31, officials said.

The driver, whose identity was not released, stayed on scene and was not immediately charged.

Police are still investigating the crash.
