NEW SPRINGVILLE — A mother was indicted for murder after she allegedly stuffed her newborn daughter into a plastic bag and left her in a trash can to die, prosecutors said.
Nausheen Rahman, 28, was indicted on murder and concealment of a human corpse charges Friday for the death of her newborn daughter, who was found in the trash outside her New Springville home on March 12, District Attorney Michael McMahon said.
"The victim in this case is an innocent newborn who was allegedly left by her mother to die in the trash," McMahon said in a statement.
On March 11, Rahman gave birth to her daughter inside her home at 174 Richmond Hill Road, McMahon said.
Rahman then cut the umbilical cord, placed the newborn in a plastic bag and dumped her in a trash bin outside the home, McMahon said.
Rahman's parents took her to Staten Island University Hospital North for bleeding, where she initially denied giving birth to doctors then later admitted to putting the infant in the trash, prosecutors said.
Officers discovered the newborn at about 11:30 a.m. the next day, police said.
Rahman pleaded not guilty in court on Friday and was held without bail, according to the Staten Island District Attorney's office.
Her lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
